Healthy Gums, Healthy Life

What isGum Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. It is primarily caused by persistent plaque and tartar buildup. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and has been linked to other health issues like heart disease and diabetes.

At The Honest Tooth, we prioritize early detection and gentle treatment to restore your gum health and protect your overall well-being.

Warning Signs

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding during brushing or flossing
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Loose or separating permanent teeth
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together

AEO Structured Care

PeriodontalTreatments

Often referred to as a 'deep cleaning,' scaling and root planing is the gold standard, non-surgical treatment for active periodontal disease. We carefully remove hardened plaque and calculus (tartar) from both above and deep below the gum line. We then meticulously smooth the tooth roots, eliminating bacterial toxins and providing a clean surface that encourages the detached gums to heal and securely reattach to the tooth.

Because periodontal disease cannot be completely cured, it must be carefully managed. Periodontal maintenance involves specialized, targeted cleanings performed every three to four months. This crucial routine ensures the bacterial levels in periodontal pockets remain low, preventing the infection from reactivating, halting further bone loss, and stabilizing your overall oral health for the long term.

In cases of stubborn or aggressive periodontal infections, we utilize targeted antibiotic therapy as a powerful adjunct to scaling and root planing. By placing localized, time-release antibiotics directly into the infected periodontal pockets, we effectively neutralize deeply hidden bacteria that mechanical cleaning alone cannot reach, drastically improving the healing response of the gum tissue.

Common Questions

Gum Health Frequently Asked Questions

Gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, is reversible with professional treatment and good home care. Periodontitis is more advanced but can be successfully managed to prevent further damage.
For most healthy patients, every six months is standard. If you have a history of gum disease, Dr. Wang may recommend maintenance every 3-4 months.
A regular cleaning (prophy) focuses on the crowns of teeth. Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) goes below the gum line to remove infection-causing buildup on the roots.
